Explanation

Representativity

Farmers’ organisations must include all types of farmer (including women and young people) and membership should exemplify its geographic area or value chain. This competence is reflected in annual subscription renewals and in the degree of influence exerted by the organisation.

Participation

In farmers’ organisations, farmers are instrumental in their own development, with elected leaders consulting members when making decisions.

Accountability

Participation and accountability are two sides of the same coin, and the accountability of farmers’ organisations should be primarily to the farmers.

Inclusiveness

This requires farmers’ organisations to be aware of the specific interests of women and youth, and to encourage vulnerable groups to be active members.

Professionalism

Current conditions, particularly fluctuating markets and environmental/climatic change, make the quality of services offered by farmers’ organisations ever more important. To maintain these services, the organisations need trained, motivated staff and good leadership.

Financial sustainability

Avoiding dependency on donor funding is a permanent challenge, but grants are necessary to overcome structural barriers and to ensure long-term organisational development. Organisations must have the capacity to manage their affairs based on a strategic vision and eventually to become self-financing.

Networking

Farmers’ organisations need working relationships with policymakers and with leaders and managers of other groups. National federations are important to exert political leverage and to join regional and international groupings.
